The Department of Pathology will award a scholarship each year, on behalf of the Marilyn Ohm-Smith Pathology Student Scholarship Fund. Marilyn was a 1974 U of I graduate of the Masters of Science in Pathology. This scholarship will go to current UI MLS students only.

One $1000 scholarship will be awarded to an MLS student. 

It is the donor’s preference that the scholarship be given to student(s) who demonstrates financial need, high academic merit, is the first member of their family to attend college and/or faced challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances. If a recipient matching the stated preferences cannot be found, the award will be given to an individual who most closely matches the stated preferences.

Evaluation process

If interested, please fill out and return the attached application form expanding on the two topics listed. These answers will be used to evaluate applicants based on the criteria stated by the donor.

About the scholarship

The Marilyn Ohm-Smith Pathology Student Scholarship Fund was established in 2024.

Marilyn Jean Ohm graduated from the University of Iowa Master of Science in Pathology Program in 1974. Her mentor was Franklin Koontz, and her thesis was titled “The effect of cephalosporin prophylaxis on women undergoing hysterectomy.”

Evaluation process

  1. Email announcement in August with instructions for how to apply.

  3. Review by Scholarship Committee. The applications will be judged by committee based on:
    1. Student financial need
    2. Student academic merit
    3. First-generation student status
    4. Challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances faced by the student.
  4. Announcement and email identifying scholarship winner.
  5. Pathology to provide payment to the winner.
