The Department of Pathology awards a scholarship each year, on behalf of the Imogene Fisher Family, to current University of Iowa Medical Laboratory Scientist Program students. 

This scholarship is only for University of Iowa students.

Two $1000.00 scholarships will be awarded this year!

The scholarship award is based on the completion of an essay, at least three pages, double-spaced, font size 12 on one of the topics below.  The essays are evaluated by a committee of Pathology laboratory supervisors and quality engineers.

Imogene Fisher was a University of Iowa Health Care medical laboratory scientist (technologist) that worked in the Bone Marrow Lab.

Application

The deadline for submission is August 31st. We will announce the winners during the month of September.

Essay topics (please select one):

  1. How does medical laboratory science fit into your long-term career goals and what have you done to prepare yourself? Please describe an extra-curricular volunteer or community service activity or a position that you’ve held that uses your basic medical laboratory knowledge or skill set. If you volunteered, why did you volunteer? What was the impact to any patients or clients who received your services? How did this activity/experience affect your future career plans?
  2. Please write about the importance of quality in laboratory medicine and how it affects patient outcomes.  Please give 2 specific examples in which your actions (in concert with your clinical instructor or other laboratorians) affected the quality of a patient outcome.

Evaluation process

  1. Email announcement in August with instructions for how to apply.
  2. Scholarship essay deadline: submit application and essays no later than 5 p.m., August 31st to Gabe Young (gabriella-young@uiowa.edu).

  3. Review by Scholarship Committee in September. The essays are judged on:
    1. content,
    2. organization,
    3. mechanics/format and
    4. style/readability
  4. Announcement and email sent to winners during September.
  5. Department of Pathology to provide payment to the winners. If you have a U-Bill account, it will be directly deposited.
